Status of Adolescent Health in Arizona

A Report of the Arizona Adolescent Health Coalition

March 2004

The Status of Adolescent Health in Arizona report provides data on the health status of adolescents and covers a range of topics including the following: general physical health, vision, hearing, immunizations, oral health, physical activity, nutrition, mental health, suicide, substance use (tobacco, alcohol, and other drugs), sexuality, sexually transmitted diseases, teen pregnancy, unintentional injury, intentional injury, and some special populations (incarcerated youth, runaway and homeless youth, children with special health care needs, and immigrant youth). Each section begins with an introduction to the issue area, in order to orient the reader to the importance of the issue for adolescents. National data are provided to give a general picture of the issue area. Arizona data are provided wherever available to focus attention on the young people in our state and their particular situation. The Arizona Adolescent Health Coalition has included recommendations related to specific topics and for improving the overall health and well-being of Arizonas adolescents. Sources for all data included in the report and websites, where available, are listed.

While data in the report draw attention to the problems and issues facing adolescents, the Arizona Adolescent Health Coalition believes that it is essential to keep a strong focus on the assets of young Arizonans. Most adolescents in our state are healthy members of society. They deserve the best environment, services, and supports we can provide for them. It is the hope of the Coalition that this publication will help each and every Arizonan to identify something he or she can do to ensure that Arizona adolescents grow into healthy adults.
